WINTER

CHALET
Interiors:
Constructed in 2008, Chalet Chante-Clarine is a modern interpretation of a traditional Swiss mountain chalet, with the "wow factor" being provided by the fantastic double height main room with it's large sliding glass windows - giving the airy feel of a North American ski lodge.  The 4 double bedrooms are all on the ground floor (3 have French windows on to the terrace) and each bedroom has it's own bathroom/shower room.

We have been keen to provide a stylish, but comfortable holiday retreat.  The chalet is furnished and equipped to an extremely high standard (eg. Persian rugs and textiles, top quality Sealy mattresses, Hungarian goose down duvets, Egyptian cotton bed linen, etc, etc!).  The exceptionally well equipped kitchen will appeal to all keen cooks!

There is a large flat screen TV with UK and European satellite stations, home cinema systems and broadband internet connection, as well as a good selection of books and games for those who wish to relax indoors.  An excellent modern cast iron wood burning stove adds to the ambiance of this superb living space.

Upper level:  The chalet is entered from the front door directly into a spacious tiled hallway with cloakroom off.  There is also a "technical" room with internal access to the good size garage with ski and boot storage.  The garage has an electric up and over door with remote control and inset service door.

Living/Dining:  Large glazed double doors lead into the stunning full height living room with oak flooring and massive sliding glass windows that open onto a 2m wide balcony, enjoying amazing panoramic views of the valley below and across to the peaks of the Dents du Midi mountain range.  These windows have remotely operated electric blinds.

The Dining Area includes a French oak dresser and oak dining table, the latter easily accommodating  10 people, while relaxed seating is provided by two sumptuous 4 seater Italian leather sofas, matching recliner and footstool.

Kitchen:  The tiled kitchen is open plan and includes oven, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, microwave, and is separated from the main room by an island unit with inset 5 ring hob.   There is a generous supply of quality crockery (Royal Doulton), glassware (Schott) and cutlery (Myners).

Mezzanine:  There is a flight of wooden stairs in the main living room giving access to a large mezzanine floor overlooking the main room and which provides a delightful second seating/sleeping area, comprising two comfortable 41" sofa beds, chest of drawer and writing desk.

From the hallway a staircase leads down to the bedrooms and laundry room at garden level.

Garden level:   Laundry room ("cave") with washing machine, tumble dryer, butler sink, iron and ironing board.

Bedroom 1 with large Queensize bed, fitted wardrobe with shelves and hanging space, bedside cabinet and lamps, chair, French windows to large south facing terrace.  En suite shower room, basin and wc.

Bedroom 2 with large Queensize bed, fitted wardrobe with shelves and hanging space, bedside cabinets and lamps, chair, French windows to large south facing terrace.  This bedroom has it's own bathroom directly opposite, comprising wc, bath, separate shower cubicle, and a vanitory unit with twin basins and storage below.

Bedroom 3 with large Queensize bed, fitted wardrobe with shelves and hanging space, bedside cabinets with lamps, chair, French windows to large south facing terrace.  En suite bathroom comprising wc, bath, separate shower cubicle, and a vanitory unit with twin basins and storage below.

Bedroom 4 with twin 1m single beds (these can be pushed together to form a 2m wide Kingsize bed), fitted wardrobe with shelves and hanging space, bedside cabinets and lamps.  En suite shower room with basin and wc.

All the bedrooms enjoy magnificent views and are stylishly furnished to a high standard.  The extremely comfortable beds have Sealy mattresses, Hungarian goose down duvets and Egyptian cotton linen, which together with the pure mountain air, guarantee a perfect nights rest!

The bedrooms are all carpeted, while the hallway, bathrooms and laundry room are tiled.  The chalet has under-floor heating (individual room controllable).           BACK UP

ACTIVITIES
Skiing and Snowboarding:  The chalet is just a few minutes walk from the nearest piste, (which means in winter, snow permitting, you can ski right back to the chalet door) and an easy blue run down to La Barboleuse village where there is a telecabine station that takes you up to the mountain restaurant at Les Chaux.  From there you can access the rest of the Villars, Gryon ski domain and indeed go over to Les Diablerets, with it's glacier (3000m) that provides skiing well into summer.

Skiing is usually possible throughout the Villars Gryon area all season, from December to April.  There are about 225 km of local well groomed pistes, providing varied and interesting skiing to suit all skill levels.  For beginners the Les Chaux area above the chalet is ideal, being quieter than Bretaye and classes can be booked there near the cable car station.  There are actually two ski schools that operate in this area, blue/yellow (Villars Ski School, which uses "ski evolotif" method) and the red (Ecole Suisse de Ski & Snowboard-Villars).

Intermediates and advanced skiers and boarders will love the huge area covered by the lift pass including the superb snow of Les Diablerets glacier with it's snowboard parks and perfect pistes for carving!  To enjoy a day skiing on the glacier it's best to start fairly early in order to dki across to Les Diablerets village (taking one of the most scenic chair lift rides to be found anywhere in the Alps) and then hopping on the connecting ski bus for a short ride to the Col du Pillon cable car and on up to the top of the spectacular glacier.  The buses run frequently, but the last one leaves Les Diablerets village at 11.30am.

There are actually 4 glaciers in the area available for heli skiing and for those who want to sample other ski domains there are a dozen notable ski resorts within one hour's drive from our chalet, including for example Gstaad, Verbier or the Portes du Soleil.  On your way home enjoy the modern thermal baths at Lavez les Bains (between Martigny and Bex).  What better way to end a day's skiing than by soaking in an outdoor hot water pool, being pummelled by powerful massage jets and watching the rose flow of the setting sun on the snow capped mountains!

Ski Hire and Passes :  The Alpes Vaudoise lift pass covers all the ski lifts in Villars, Gryon, Les Diablerets, Leysin and Les Mosses.  Other passes are available, including morning only, late morning and afternoon or afternoon only.
Skiing for under 9s is free and 9-15 year olds enjoy a discounted lift pass.

Other winter activities : For those who wish to try cross country skiing or snow shoe walking there are kms of marked pistes and non skiers can still meet up with downhill skiers at one of the many mountain restaurants.
If speed over the snow while sitting down is your thing then you can take the 7km toboggan run from the top of Les Diablerets, which also provides a thrilling night-time descent to help settle a fondue dinner!  Otherwise you can always take a dog sled ride or try "poubelling" down our local blue run near the chalet.  Villars has an outdoor ice rink.

LOCATION
Description of the area:  Chalet Chante-Clarine ("song of the cowbells") is situated in a wonderfully tranquil setting above the small village of La Barboleuse, between Villars and Gryon (you can sometimes faintly hear the cowbells, as about 100m further up our road, which in summer leads on into mountain pasture, there is an old rustic wooden cowshed still in use!)..  The chalet enjoys amazing panoramic views of the Swiss Alps, across to an array of peaks, including Les Dents du Midi and Les Dents du Morclas.

Villars itself is a charming all-year-round resort, occupying a sunny plateau with views to Mont Blanc and is served by a railway that runs from the Rhone valley up to the top of Bretaye, the heart of the main Villars skiing area.  Partly because there are several international schools of renown based in Villars, the town does not close down in summer, as is the case with many ski resorts.
